ADX (+DI / −DI)

How strong a trend is — not which way it points.

ADX measures trend strength on a 0–100 scale. Readings above 25 indicate a genuine trend; below 20 the market is drifting sideways.

Direction comes from the two companion lines: +DI measures upward pressure and −DI downward. ADX tells you a trend exists; the DI lines tell you whose it is.

ADX 31 with +DI 13.5 and −DI 29.7: a strong trend, and the −DI dominance says it is a downtrend. If +DI and −DI were nearly equal, a strong ADX would mean a forceful but directionless market — often a sign a breakout is near.

Below 20 — no real trend, sideways

25 to 50 — a genuine trend

Above 50 — a very strong trend
