NR7 / NR4 (Narrow Range Bar)
The tightest trading range of the last 7 (or 4) sessions — a coiled spring that often precedes a sharp move.
Each bar on a chart covers a range from its low to its high. An NR7 bar has the narrowest range of the last seven bars (NR4: the last four). It means volatility has contracted — buyers and sellers are in a standoff.
Traders watch narrow-range bars because contraction tends to resolve into expansion: the next decisive move often starts from here. The bar itself is neutral — it says a move is coming, not which way.
A stock that swings ₹10-15 a day suddenly trades in a ₹3 band. That session is an NR7 — the spring is coiled.
Neutral by itself — wait for the range to break before reading direction.
Several NR bars in a row deepen the compression and the eventual move.
On illiquid stocks a narrow bar may just mean nobody traded — check volume before reading meaning into it.
