NIFTY 50 / 100 / 500

Baskets of India's largest listed companies, used as benchmarks.

An index tracks a fixed list of companies so you can talk about "the market" as one number. The NIFTY 50 holds India's 50 largest and most traded companies; the NIFTY 100 the largest 100; the NIFTY 500 roughly the top 500, which is most of the investable market.

They double as definitions: NIFTY 100 membership is the usual marker of a large cap, NIFTY MIDCAP 150 of a mid cap, NIFTY SMALLCAP 250 of a small cap.

Screening within an index matters because rank depends on the pool. Being 3rd of 50 is a very different statement from 3rd of 500.
