How many shares changed hands.

Volume is the count of shares traded in a period. It measures participation — how many people cared enough to act.

A price move on heavy volume carries more weight than the same move on light volume, because more of the market took part. Volume also tells you how easily you could buy or sell without moving the price yourself.
